French Papier Mache Passe BouleCarnival Game Harold Lloyd Figure, Early 1920s
This rare French papier mache "passe-boules" carnival game in the shape of Harold Lloyd. The Harold Lloyd figure is incredible with its hand painted colours and detail. He stands on a wooden base with 4 small hand painted red wooden wheels. On the base in the front is a hand written chalk note "3 balles, 10 sous". The "sou" used to be the currency before the French Franc and of course the Euro. The "boules" (balls) used were light fabric similar to rolled socks. The children would aim at the hole in Harold's hat, while someone pulled the tray sideways to make the aiming more difficult. This is only known early 20th century Harold Lloyd's "passe-boule" original papier mache carnival game known to exist. Finding one at all, let alone in this state, is incredibly rare. There is no end to the places where Harold could go- he would add conversation, whimsy and history to any room.
