In this listing we are offering an original cast iron back end to a toy Pratt & Letchworth horse drawn toy fire engine. The toy dates from circa 1890's or so. We have the back end with the pumper section. Also present is the one original fireman figure which stands behind the boiler section.
The cast iron driver which would have sat in the front seat is missing. Also, the entire front end which would have had two running horses is entirely missing. The incomplete part of the toy which we are offering measures 9 1/8 inches long by 6 1/2 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches across the back wheels. The complete toy (which we are NOT offering and do not have) would measure approximately 17 inches to 18 inches long.
This is the version which has the boiler which is nickel plated & the rest of the toy which is painted in various colors. The toy has seen considerable play use wear to the paint & finish.
The nickel plated boiler has some rust. But, around 50% of the original plating still remains.
The painted components & the original back standing figure retain over 50% of the original multi-colored paint. The exception to this is the back wheels which have considerable rust & only around 10% or less of the original paint is present on the back wheels. One of the back wheels has a number of casting flaws in the making (mostly around the center area). That one wheel is of a lower quality than we would normally expect to see with an original Pratt & Letchworth wheel. However, the patina, areas of rust, deterioration of paint from age & use, & color of paint all match up perfectly with the other wheel which we are certain is original.
So, apparently, the wheel with the casting flaws is original & slipped through the usual Pratt & Letchworth quality control standards. We just wanted to point out that normally Pratt & Letchworth had better quality control than to release a wheel with this level of casting flaws.
There are no cracks & no repairs. We have left this toy uncleaned & exactly as we found it.
The toy would probably clean up a good bit, if desired. We hope to find a home for this toy with someone who will complete it with the appropriate front end.
