Rare TIPPCO WW2 German Military AMBULANCE Tin Wind-up Plus Figures, Tipp & Co
This is a very rare and nice example of a windup clockwork tinplate military ambulance made in Germany pre-WW2 by the Tippco (Tipp & Co) company. Tippco made a wide range of airplanes, tanks, cannons, trucks, half tracks, and other military and civilian equipment. This ambulance is made of tin with lithographed camouflage. It is about 9 inches long, and about 4.5 inches tall to the top of the luggage rack on the roof. It winds up through a hole in the grill. The original key is not included so I haven't been able to test the clockwork, but the clockwork appears to be in excellent condition (see photo). The litho of the piece is very, very good, with only very light playwear. There does appear to have been some touch-up paint applied to the right rear door (see photo). It has all four original wheels, headlights, steering wheel, and roof rack, as well as the.
Bench seat and shelf in the back where the stretcher would do. The two rear doors are hinged and swing open. They lock shut using the handle on the right door.
These figures are not original to the ambulance, but they display well with them. These figures are also in excellent condition.
Its owner, Phillip Ullman, being Jewish, was forced to flee from Germany to England following Hitler's rise to power, where he founded Mettoy (Metal Toy). Tippco's military vehicles are among the finest pre-war clockwork toys ever produced. Many pre-war German toys were destroyed after the war contributing to their rarity today.
